There’s a surprising lack of depth in the new romance-underworld-crime drama Charlie Countryman, starring Shia LeBouf and Evan Rachel Wood. To be perfectly frank, the movie sounds much more interesting than it actually is. In short, it plays like a CW version of The Godfather. This time, however, you’ll probably be rooting for the couple not to surmount the odds against them.

Charlie is played by Shia LeBouf, whose pained look throughout the film basically screams I want to act!. Well, ok, except that he doesn’t seem to enjoy the company of the young woman (Gabi) who he’s supposedly infatuated with. She is the daughter of a Romanian mob boss and he wants to save her from the seedy underworld of Bucharest– he also wants to be saved , but she’s more interested in keeping an aloof distance than doing anything remotely close to saving Charlie.

There a lot of Bella-and-Edwardesque moping, and if the two lead actually had any chemistry it may have saved the movie.
